Allegations of Sudanese Army Chemical Weapons Use Draw Growing International Scrutiny

Allegations that the Sudanese army used chemical weapons during the war are drawing increasing international attention, moving beyond denials by the authorities in Port Sudan.

The issue has expanded from international press investigations and intelligence assessments to discussions in the US Congress, international human rights forums and expert circles at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The Port Sudan authorities sought to contain the allegations through denial. Their widening reach, however, has brought the matter into arenas concerned with accountability and the enforcement of the global ban on chemical weapons.

That growing scrutiny does not itself establish that chemical weapons were used. The allegations, intelligence assessments and expert discussions remain distinct from a formal finding by an international investigative body.
