Malian Army Enters Strategic Northern City of Kidal Without Resistance

Mali’s army announced on Tuesday that it had entered the strategic northern city of Kidal without encountering resistance.

The advance followed the withdrawal of fighters from the Azawad Liberation Front, who had controlled the city for several months.

The front had taken Kidal during a wide-ranging offensive in April. Its withdrawal cleared the way for the army’s entry into the city.

The announcement marks a change in control of the strategic city. No further details were provided on the fighters’ withdrawal or the army’s deployment inside Kidal.
