Trump Says Iran Has Abandoned Many Nuclear Weapons Plans

US President Donald Trump reaffirmed early Sunday that Iran would not obtain a nuclear weapon, saying Tehran had already abandoned many of its plans related to nuclear arms.

Trump described the retreat as something that had already taken place, rather than a pledge by Iran to change course in the future.

His assertion concerned many of Tehran’s alleged weapons-related plans, not an abandonment of its entire nuclear programme.

The remarks paired a claim about Iran’s actions with a renewed statement of Washington’s position: that Tehran must not acquire a nuclear weapon.
