AI in Medicine: A Helping Hand or a New Source of Errors?

Artificial intelligence is already being used in radiology rooms, clinics and laboratories, helping reduce some medical errors while raising concerns about new ones.

The challenge is not simply whether AI can assist doctors, but how much confidence they should place in its results. A tool that supports medical judgment can become a source of risk when its output is accepted without sufficient scrutiny.

Excessive trust may allow AI-generated errors to go unnoticed. Those mistakes can be difficult for a doctor to detect, complicating the task of distinguishing useful assistance from misleading guidance.

This creates a tension for medical practice: the same technology that helps prevent some errors may introduce others. Its growing presence makes careful review no less important.

The central question is therefore not whether AI belongs in medicine, but how to use it without weakening clinical oversight. Its value depends on supporting doctors’ judgment rather than replacing it with unquestioning reliance.
