MI5 Urges UK Universities to Halt Cooperation With Chinese Research Institute

Britain’s domestic intelligence service, MI5, has urged universities across the United Kingdom to immediately stop cooperating with the China General Technology Research Institute.

The rare intervention centres on concerns that the Chinese institute funded research linked to espionage.

The warning puts academic cooperation with the institute under scrutiny, raising questions about the security implications of university research partnerships.

The information provided did not identify the universities involved, specify the research projects at issue or indicate whether institutions had acted on MI5’s advice.
