An image bringing together 313 nebulae celebrates the legacy of Sharpless, with 800 hours of exposure revealing a celestial panorama built through extraordinary patience.

The story stretches back decades, to photographic plates that recorded the sky long before the latest effort to bring these nebulae together. That earlier work provides the historical backdrop to the new image.

Creating the panorama meant travelling between some of China’s darkest skies and devoting hundreds of hours to exposure. The finished view condenses that long process into a single image, concealing much of the effort behind its intricate detail.
