Houthi Advance Toward Bab al-Mandab Exposes Saudi Strategic Vulnerability

The latest Houthi offensive has brought most of Yemen’s western Red Sea coast under the group’s control and pushed its forces as far as the Bab al-Mandab Strait, exposing a sensitive point in Saudi Arabia’s regional security position.

The advance could give Tehran greater leverage in its confrontation with Washington. Control along the coast and a presence near the strait add a maritime dimension to a conflict whose consequences extend beyond Yemen.

Yet viewing the offensive solely through Iran’s interests risks overlooking what it reveals about the Houthis themselves. Their territorial gains point to growing military and organisational capabilities, strengthening the group’s ability to shape the conflict.

For Saudi Arabia, the advance presents a particularly complex dilemma. Already facing strained resources and competing challenges, Riyadh must contend with a stronger Houthi position along a strategically important stretch of Yemen’s coastline.

The push toward Bab al-Mandab therefore represents more than a territorial shift. It highlights how the Houthis’ expanding reach could increase pressure on Saudi Arabia while potentially widening Tehran’s room for manoeuvre against Washington.
