‘You’re Too Sensitive’: How Everyday Remarks Can Become Provocative

An apparently ordinary phrase can take on a sharper edge during a tense conversation. How it is delivered, when it is used and whether it is repeated can make an exchange feel less like a discussion and more like a provocation.

“You’re too sensitive” is one such remark. Rather than addressing what has upset someone, it can shift attention to their reaction, leaving the original concern unresolved and putting them on the defensive.

Context matters, however. A single comment does not establish that someone is deliberately trying to provoke another person. Tone and repetition, particularly in moments of disagreement, can help distinguish an awkward remark from a recurring pattern of dismissal.

The issue is therefore not just the words themselves, but how they function in the conversation. When a phrase repeatedly redirects attention away from a concern and towards the person raising it, an otherwise everyday exchange can become increasingly tense.
