Egypt and Sudan deny Ethiopian accusations of backing Abiy Ahmed’s opponents

Egypt and Sudan have rejected accusations by Ethiopia’s army chief that they are supporting a new alliance of armed and political groups seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.

Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, chief of staff of the Ethiopian army, accused the two countries of backing the alliance. His allegations drew separate denials from an Egyptian diplomatic source and the Sudanese military.

The Egyptian diplomatic source denied the accusations, saying Cairo does not interfere in Ethiopia’s internal crisis.

The source said Addis Ababa should address its domestic problems rather than hold outside parties responsible for them.

Sudan’s army also issued a statement rejecting the Ethiopian allegations, describing them as “baseless.”
