Why Are Gen Z’s Test Scores Falling?

The world’s largest international study of 15-year-olds has revealed a worrying decline in science, mathematics and reading scores, raising questions about the academic performance of Generation Z.

The findings span three core areas of learning rather than a single subject. Together, they offer a broad measure of how well teenagers can understand written information, work with numbers and apply scientific knowledge.

The reported decline does not, on its own, establish why performance has fallen. Identifying the causes would require closer examination of students’ learning conditions and the differences between education systems, rather than attributing the results to a single influence.

The findings also call for care in describing an entire generation. A study of 15-year-olds provides a snapshot of performance at a particular stage of schooling, not a verdict on the abilities of all Gen Z learners.

The central question is therefore not only why scores are dropping, but what support students need to improve. Answering it will depend on understanding where learning gaps are emerging and which responses can address them.
