Houthi Advance Toward Bab al-Mandab Exposes Saudi Strategic Vulnerability

The latest Houthi offensive has brought most of Yemen’s western Red Sea coast under the group’s control and pushed its forces toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait, exposing a sensitive point in Saudi Arabia’s regional security.

The advance could give Tehran additional leverage in its confrontation with Washington. Control over territory approaching the strait puts the conflict close to a vital maritime passage, expanding its potential consequences beyond Yemen.

Yet the offensive also highlights the Houthis’ own growing military and organizational capabilities. The scale of their coastal gains points to a group increasingly able to translate battlefield advances into strategic influence.

For Saudi Arabia, the result is a particularly difficult dilemma. The kingdom already faces pressure on its resources and multiple competing challenges, while the Houthi advance adds a maritime dimension to its security concerns.

The central challenge for Riyadh is therefore broader than the loss of territory to an adversary. It must contend with an increasingly capable force near a critical sea route while weighing how to respond without deepening the strain on its resources.
