After Tsunami Swept Away His Wife, Yasuo Learned to Dive in Hope of Finding Her

After losing his wife to a tsunami, Yasuo devoted years of his life to diving, holding on to the possibility that he might one day find her beneath the water.

For two years, he watched Japanese coast guard divers search for bodies and recover belongings left behind by the victims. Then he decided to learn to dive himself.

“I learned to dive. I felt that I might meet her one day, as long as I kept diving,” he said.

For Yasuo, returning to the water became a way to stay close to his wife. His search was driven by a hope that watching from the shore could no longer satisfy.

Each dive offered another opportunity to look for her, turning the search into a deeply personal commitment that continued over the years.
