Windows 11 Can Keep Image Thumbnails After Photos Are Deleted

Windows 11 can retain thumbnail versions of photos long after users delete the original files, leaving small previews stored on the device even when the full-size images are gone.

These thumbnails help the system display image previews without having to generate them each time a folder is opened. Deleting a photo does not necessarily clear its cached preview at the same time.

The distinction matters for privacy: a retained thumbnail is not a full copy of the original photo, but it may still reveal what the image contained. Users who want to remove those traces need to clear the thumbnail cache separately.

To do so, open Disk Cleanup, select the relevant drive and tick “Thumbnails” in the list of files to delete. Review any other selected categories before confirming, so that only the intended items are removed.

Users can also stop File Explorer from displaying thumbnails by opening File Explorer Options, selecting the View tab and enabling “Always show icons, never thumbnails.” Clearing the existing cache and disabling thumbnail previews provides more control than deleting the original photos alone.
