Khaled Salah Asks Morsi: What Happened to Egypt’s Alternative Energy Plans?

Egyptian writer Khaled Salah has questioned what became of the alternative energy projects promoted during the presidential election campaign, as Egypt faces shortages across its energy supplies.

In his column, Salah directed the question at President Mohamed Morsi, who was among the candidates who spoke during the race about important alternatives for meeting the country’s energy needs.

Salah contrasted those campaign ambitions with shortages of electricity, gas, petroleum, diesel and heavy fuel oil. He said there had been no visible sign or public announcement of the promised projects so far.

His criticism focused not only on the lack of apparent progress, but also on the absence of discussion. The alternative energy proposals, he argued, had disappeared from public debate at a moment of acute pressure.

Salah also warned that Egypt was close to losing roughly a quarter of the electricity it receives from the High Dam, underscoring his call for answers about the plans presented during the campaign.
