Egypt’s Cultural Identity Goes Beyond What Meets the Eye

The relationship between culture and identity in Egypt raises a question about how a society understands itself: does culture define identity, or does identity shape culture?

Identity is not limited to the visible characteristics that distinguish a person, a community or a nation. It also encompasses deeper influences rooted in what can be described as the collective unconscious.

From this perspective, outward expressions of belonging offer only a partial picture. Less visible assumptions and shared understandings can be just as important to how people see themselves and their place in society.
