Remembering Ahmed Omar Hashem: From Bani Amer to Al-Azhar’s Senior Scholars

The first anniversary of the death of Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem, a member of Al-Azhar’s Council of Senior Scholars, is being marked today. He died on October 7, 2026.

The remembrance looks back at a journey that began in Bani Amer and took him to senior religious office. His hometown provides the starting point for an account of his life and career.

Hashem’s membership of the Council of Senior Scholars placed him among Al-Azhar’s leading religious figures. That role stands at the heart of the anniversary tribute.

He is also remembered as a “praiser of the Prophet,” an epithet highlighted alongside his scholarly standing. The tribute brings together those two aspects of his public identity as it traces his path from Bani Amer to religious leadership.
