Bibliotheca Alexandrina Marks 24 Years with a Look at Its Famous Mural

The 24th anniversary of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina offers an occasion to revisit one of its most distinctive features: a mural bringing together thousands of symbols, letters and inscriptions from alphabets used around the world across the ages.

The mural’s character comes from this gathering of different writing traditions. Rather than presenting a single script, it places forms of written expression from different periods and places alongside one another.

Its visual richness reflects the diversity of the alphabets represented. Letters and symbols become part of a shared composition, drawing attention to writing as both a means of communication and a form of cultural expression.

For a library, that emphasis carries particular resonance. The mural can be read as a tribute to the many ways people have recorded knowledge and passed it between generations.

As the Alexandria institution marks 24 years since its establishment, the famous mural remains a distinctive expression of its connection to the written word.
