Egypt’s President Launches East Port Said Project as Security and Water Issues Draw Focus

Egypt’s president gave the signal to begin the East Port Said project, as the country faced developments involving security, water management and efforts to secure financing from abroad.

Four police officers were killed in a terrorist attack in Giza. In a separate incident, a helicopter crashed on the Cairo–Ismailia road, injuring its crew.

The irrigation minister described the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as a “sensitive issue.” Water management measures also included a ban on wasting irrigation water in drainage canals and on unauthorised rice cultivation, with fines reaching 2,500 Egyptian pounds per feddan.

A solar power station in Hurghada was also highlighted, with Japanese financing supporting the project.

Government sources said Egypt was seeking $8.5 billion from abroad. The information provided did not specify the prospective sources or terms of that financing.
