Northern Delta Needs Rice Cultivation to Help Preserve Soil, Irrigation Official Says

Rice cultivation is needed in the northern Nile Delta to help preserve the soil, according to Ashraf Darwish, head of the Irrigation Sector at Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Darwish stressed that modern irrigation systems are not necessarily suitable for all agricultural land.

His remarks highlighted the importance of considering local land conditions when assessing irrigation methods, rather than treating modern systems as a universal solution.

He pointed to the northern Delta’s need for rice cultivation as a case in which protecting the soil remains a key consideration in agricultural water management.
