Ukrainians and Syrians Lead Asylum Seekers in Russia

Ukrainians and Syrians topped the list of people seeking asylum in Russia during the first half of the current year, according to Russian Interior Ministry data.

The ministry’s findings placed the two nationalities ahead of other groups applying for protection in Russia over the six-month period.

The summary of the data did not provide applicant totals or specify the respective positions of Ukrainians and Syrians within the leading group.

The finding concerns people seeking asylum, rather than those granted it. No details on application outcomes were included in the summary.
