Egypt’s ‘Golden 1,000 Days’ Initiative Shifts Maternal and Child Care Toward Prevention

Egypt’s presidential “Golden 1,000 Days” initiative is shifting the focus of maternal and child care from late intervention toward prevention and healthier behaviour.

The initiative centres on the period from the start of pregnancy until a child reaches the age of two, placing mothers and young children at the heart of efforts to develop primary care services.

Part of a presidential initiative to improve primary care and services for Egyptian families, the programme presents this early stage as a central focus of maternal and child health care.

Its approach links preventive care with changes in health behaviour, moving beyond responding to problems only after they arise. The emphasis is on making prevention a core part of care throughout pregnancy and a child’s earliest years.
