Russia’s Military Expansion Signals Readiness for Wider Conflict, Analyst Says

Russia’s rising military spending and expansion of its armed forces may point to preparations for a confrontation beyond Ukraine, according to Nizar Boush, a political science professor at Moscow University.

Boush views the buildup as a sign that Moscow is preparing for the possibility of a broader conflict with NATO, rather than focusing solely on the demands of the war in Ukraine.

His assessment links the increase in defense spending with the enlargement of Russia’s forces, interpreting the two moves as part of a wider military posture.

The distinction is between meeting the needs of the current war and developing capacity for a potentially larger confrontation. In Boush’s view, Russia’s preparations extend beyond the former.
