Turkey Detains Refereeing Committee Chief and Six Members

Turkish authorities have detained the head of football’s Central Refereeing Committee and six of its members, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said Tuesday.

The detentions relate to allegations of interference in refereeing procedures. The accusations place the committee’s leadership at the centre of the case.

Gurlek described the action as the latest step in what he called the “battle for clean football.”
