Iraq’s Sadr Dissolves Promised Day Brigade, Calls for State Control of Arms

Iraqi Sadrist movement leader Muqtada al-Sadr announced on Wednesday the immediate dissolution of the Promised Day Brigade, alongside a call to place weapons exclusively under state control.

Sadr also announced that the Army of the Imam would be transformed into an institution named Supporters of Imam al-Mahdi.

His appeal paired the demand for state control of arms with a call to support Iraq’s security forces.

The announcements coincided with the end of the US forces’ mission in Iraq, placing the changes to the Sadrist groups against the backdrop of a transition in the country’s security arrangements.
