After Tsunami Took His Wife, Yasuo Learned to Dive in Hope of Finding Her

After losing his wife to a tsunami, Yasuo devoted years of his life to diving, holding on to the possibility that he might one day find her.

For two years, he watched Japanese coast guard divers search for bodies and recover belongings left behind by the victims.

Eventually, Yasuo decided to learn to dive himself. It was a way to continue searching for his wife and to feel close to her.

“I learned to dive. I felt that I might meet her one day, as long as I kept diving,” he said.

For Yasuo, returning to the water became an act of hope: each dive offered another chance to find the woman the waves had taken.
