Egypt and Tunisia Seek UNESCO Recognition for Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah

Egypt, Tunisia and a number of other Arab countries are working to secure a place for the Muqaddimah, by Arab historian and philosopher Abd al-Rahman Ibn Khaldun, on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

The registration effort brings renewed attention to a work widely regarded as a landmark in the study of history and society. Its title means “Introduction,” reflecting its original role as the opening to Ibn Khaldun’s broader historical writing.

Rather than simply recounting events, the Muqaddimah examines the forces that shape societies. It explores political authority, economic life and social cohesion, considering how these influence the rise and decline of states.

UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme promotes the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage. The joint Arab effort seeks recognition for the Muqaddimah within that framework; the information provided does not indicate that its inclusion has been approved.
